Microchip identification is the most superior form of
permanent identification for a pet that exists today. Many people believe that
Tattoos or collars with I.D. tags provide an adequate form of pet information.
However, nearly all tattoos placed on puppies and kittens fade and stretch so
significantly with their growth that by the time the pets are young adults, the
tattoo is illegible.
Collars
with tags are encouraged for use as they provide an immediate form of
identification and, in cases where the tag is not damaged or worn, possibly
legible contact information for the pet's owner.
Microchip implantation is a simple and PERMANENT identification that is
encouraged for ALL pets. The procedure to implant the microchip is simple- a
needle is placed under the skin, usually over the shoulder region, and the tiny
microchip (approximately the size of a piece of rice) is injected into the soft
tissues just under the skin. Microchip placement is INEXPENSIVE, especially when
you remember the identification is permanent. In many cases a few collars can
add up to the cost of a microchip!
The
ideal aspect of the microchip is that if your pet is lost (or found) and no
longer has a collar and tag on, any veterinary hospital, animal shelter or
humane society has the capacity to scan your pet and identify not only your
pet, but the best way to contact you! The microchip company is contacted and
they contact you immediately. Registration with the North America wide
registration service is free and can be updated at no cost whenever you move.
We
have many reunion success stories because owners agreed to have their pet
identified with a microchip and we encourage you to do the same with your pet!
