Pain Management and Control
|
Pain management is of utmost concern for our patients.
We acknowledge that it is difficult for pets to inform us when they are in
discomfort. It is our responsibility to identify situations in which pets are
in discomfort, or ideally, identify circumstances that may cause discomfort and
act to pre-empt pain before it occurs.
Pain
and discomfort can obviously occur in pets that have suffered trauma or are
undergoing surgery. We are trained to identify various degrees and types of
nervous system stimulation so that we can alleviate or prevent discomfort for
your pet. For situations involving surgery or trauma, this usually involves a
“multi-modal” approach to pain management. This means that we use a combination
of different types of analgesics to control different types of pain that occur
with a particular surgery or trauma.
In
situations of arthritic changes (degenerative joint disease, hip dysplasia,
elbow dysplasia, etc.) we can help to formulate a comprehensive approach to
alleviating and controlling the discomfort your pet is feeling. If your pet,
cat or dog, does not walk, run, jump or play as they used to, do not simply
believe your pet is “just getting old”. Arthritis is the MOST COMMON orthopedic
disease in pets and the associated discomfort and pain can be alleviated to a
large degree with a proper treatment plan. This plan may include natural
supplements, analgesics and anti-inflammatories, weight loss strategies and
diet selections that can give your pet significant improvement in quality of
life. Please ask us how we can help your pet if you feel they are “just getting
old”.
